It is the 18th-century Peshwa fort with a large gate. The foundation work of Shaniwarwada was started on January 10, 1730, while the construction of Shaniwarwada was completed on January 22, 1732. That day was Saturday, hence the name Shaniwarwada. It was built by Peshwa Baji Rao I, a general under Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of the Maratha Empire.

Even after 1732, new constructions and changes took place in this fort. The year 1760 dawned for the construction of the gate of the bastion. There are records of small and large fires in 1808, 1812 and 1813, while on 17 November 1817, the British mark was placed on the castle.

Henry Dandas Robertson, the first Collector of Pune, lived here for some time after that. The Shaniwarwada building was 21 feet high and had a total wall of 950 feet on all four sides. These walls and bastions still stand tall in the heart of Pune.

The wall around the castle has five large gates and nine towers. There are 9 towers on the wall and all of them are equipped with guns.

It is located on Bajirao Road, Shaniwar Peth. It is also known as Shanwarwada. It was constructed in the year 1732 in Maratha Imperial Architectural style.
