It is a Monumental cave temple from the 8th century. Pataleshwar is a Shivalaya located in the Shivajinagar area of Pune, Maharashtra. This Shivalaya was excavated during the Rashtrakuta dynasty around the 8th century AD. During the Rashtrakuta period, Pune was known as Punya Vishaya or Poonak Vishaya (Vishaya means district).
These names are found in the copperplate given during the reign of Rashtrakuta king Krishna (I). Pataleshwar Cave has been constructed by digging the ground under the ground. There are similarities between the caves of the Rashtrakuta period in Pataleshwar and Eluru.
These caves must be of the same tradition. There is a large courtyard to take Patalashwar. In the center of the courtyard is a circular Nandimandap. The roof of this Nandimandap is huge, thick and circular.
It is surrounded by steep columns. Inside it is another circle, with a Nandi placed on it in later times.
